In 1999, Master Sang
Ho Lee initiated a unique internship program bringing Korean instructors
and masters to the United States to be a part of Lee
Brothers Academy. The
program helps maintain strong ties between Tae Kwon Do students here in
America and martial artists in Korea. Each group of
interns is made up of black belts who are studying Tae Kwon Do in their
universities or as a part of their careers. In the three or four months of their visit, the interns learn
to speak English, spend time working with the Burlington police force,
visit cultural and historical sites around the state, and teach
and train extensively at Lee Brothers Academy under Master Lee.
During their time in America, the interns gain exposure to a different
side of Tae Kwon Do, learning
new methods and skills that are not found in academies in Korea.
At the same time, they bring traditional knowledge and new
developments from masters on the other side of the world and share them
with our students.
It
is important that students use their time with the interns to the
fullest, taking advantage of the program in every way they can.
By being enthusiastic and paying attention in class, students can
get expert help with their skills from black belts who were trained
under some of Korea’s most respected masters.
Interacting with the interns outside of class gives students a
better understanding of the Korean culture and language, and friendships
made through the internship program are incredibly valuable for students
who wish to visit Korea someday. Of
course, the interns benefit as well – by speaking with them as often as possible, asking questions and
getting to know them, our students can help these visitors develop their
English skills and give them better insight into the way Lee Brothers
Academy is operated. So
far, the program has been a great success – in the last seven years, Master Lee has already hosted over two dozen interns,
keeping our academy’s connection to Korea strong and beneficial
and providing amazing opportunities for students and visitors
alike.
